About

Ruth Weller is a Scottish illustrator and artist, who loves to capture the spirit of Scotland visually. She loves to work in ink, acrylic, and digital mediums, and has a special interest in messy haired Highland Cows, and the steep gradients of the Munros*.

Originally from Edinburgh, Ruth is proudly settled in Glasgow’s vibrant Southside. Though living in proximity to excellent coffee and bakeries is a must, she'll take any opportunity to escape up north.

There’s something about a drive up the A82 or a wee cruise on a Cal Mac, that guarantees the ability to settle weary hearts, and steady the mind.

On this site, you’ll find some of the images inspired by these places. May you enjoy them, too. And may you find in them, whatever it is that you need, in order to overcome life's chaos.

*Scotland’s tallest “mountains”. They’re really hills, but in Scotland, we call them mountains.

The Story So Far

In 2023, she was presented with the opportunity to illustrate a children’s book by a local author, Jane Hird.

Now a published illustrator, you can see Ruth’s work in Jane's book, "The Big Rescue". Ruth has since worked for a variety of clients, producing striking and meaningful illustrations to accompany a variety of projects. From visuals for public events, to graphic scribing for conferences and bespoke portraits, Ruth has one intention: to produce uniquely styled images that carry real meaning.

Ruth is now an artist in residence at Open Space Gallery, which is on Douglas Street in Milngavie. She continues to develop her own art, while also serving clients in their illustrative needs.

You can find Ruth on Instragram, or e-mail IllustratedbyRW@gmail.com to inquire about any of her work.

It really started around  2012, when Ruth ordered a glue gun on Amazon and made a card with a fox made of buttons. It was no masterpiece, but it was cute and fun, and she was able to sell it at her friends' Christmas Craft Market.

For over a decade, Ruth continued to intentionally develop her artistic skills as a hobby artist, while helping to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

In 2022, in a brave step, Ruth left her full time job and enrolled in a 3 month, full time crash course illustration school. This school not only gave her the opportunity to refine her skills, but also cemented the strong desire to move from hobby artist, to professional illustrator.
